Kyle dances the Macarena

Here's Kyle showing off his first party trick: dancing the Macarena.

Kyle's first few days at home

Reading Kyle's (or Papa's?) favorite book, Le Petit Prince.

Surf's up!

Flowers? For me?!?

This was actually a "bouquet" of baby clothes, washcloths, towels, and toys sent to us from my labmates.

Homecoming

Here's Kyle in the car seat for his big trip home from the hospital on Wednesday, August 27.

The receiving blankets are padding since he doesn't quite fit into the infant seat yet! I don't understand who baby products are made for - Kyle is a decent-sized baby, yet, in addition to the padded car seat issue, he also is too small for the Target brand newborn sized diapers--- we discovered this the hard way :) !

Kyle's Second Day

A few pictures of Kyle (and his happy parents) taken today...

Kyle Dorian Johnsen

Julie and Eric Johnsen are pleased and excited to announce the birth of their son, Kyle Dorian Johnsen. He was born at 2:04pm on August 25th, 2008 at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford, California. His birth weight was 3510 g (7 lbs 12 oz) and he measured 53 cm (21 in); as you can see from the attached pics, he and his mother are in good health.

Ok, here are the last hints we'll post:

First name: Four letter name.

Middle name: Last name of a current TV character as well as that of a famous surfer, and, according to some, means "from the sea".

Last name: Do you still really need a hint?...

The bets are coming in

Well, the baby is due on August 28. Eric and I would have preferred a very early arrival (baby, I promise, we'll take care of you out here!), but so far (with only a week to go), it doesn't look like that will be the case.

My mom (the soon-to-be "Grandma Dale") asked my family for bets on arrival dates and weights; anyone else who wants to vote is welcome to do so in the comments (or by email):

Aug. 25 - 2:36 pm - 8 lb. 3 oz. (Jon and Leigh)
Aug. 26 - Gramma Helen and Grampa Loua
Aug. 27 - 12 noon (when I'm finally back at work) - 9 lb. - Dale
Aug. 28 - 2 pm - 8 lb. 14 oz. - Jeff
Aug. 28 - 2 pm (labour to begin at 6 am) - 9 lb. - Gramma Sandra and Iris
Aug. 28 - 3 pm - Lisa and Ricky
Aug. 29 - 8 lb. 4 oz. - Sandra, David, Jeremy
Aug. 30 - 9 lb. 5 oz. - Rhonda, Gerry, Laura
Aug. 31 - 9 lb. 3 oz. - 6 pm - Marion and Shelley
Sept. 1 (Labour Day) - 2 am - 9 lb. 1 oz. - Bonnie, Joe, Jen, Adrienne

Baby Name Hints... Round Two

Apparently our last round of hints wasn't "hinty" enough for some readers of this blog. These will be a bit more fun, so DO NOT scroll down if you don't want baby name hints...

First Name: Was one of the top 100 most popular boys' names in the US last year, but not one of the top 10.
Second Name: Character from a 19th century novel.
Third Name: It's not hyphenated.

Please email us with your guess, we'll let you know how many you get right.

Baby names, take one

Warning: below are some hints for the names that we chose for the baby, so stop reading if you don't want to know...

At this stage, we have a good idea of what we want to name our baby; we do reserve the right to change at the last minute. We'll give you *three* sets of guesses (first+middle+last); all three have to be correct for you to win. We'll tell you if you get any right, but won't tell you which one... And the first prize will be... you get to know the name! We'll post more hints in a few days to make it easier, until the baby is born.

Hint #1 for the first name: Not the name of a famous Swiss athlete.

Hint #1 for the middle name: Unlike what we had advertised, the name is not of French origin.

Hint #1 for the last name: Ends with "en".

Babies are not very big

As if we needed another reminder of how small and helpless babies are...

(And if we run out of pants, we may dress the baby in Dad's sock, at left).

Indiana Julie

We didn't realize that having a baby was just one big obstacle course. One of the trials is getting to the OB clinic, as you can see in the pics below.

Ok, the bottom left picture is from a few years ago in Hawaii, but you get the idea. Turns out we were just taking a "shortcut" to the clinic - there isn't really any wilderness in Menlo Park...

Certified parents

We are now certified parents! We completed a pre-natal course at Stanford with a whole bunch of prospective parents. Though there was no exam, I think we passed, especially if a curve was used... Hmm, I wonder what happens to those who fail?

Happy birthday Mommy!

And Happy -1 month birthday little guy! We managed to find the ocean once again in Santa Cruz and had a good time exploring the area. The pic was taken on July 27, but I was a bit late uploading it...
